In 840, a coppersmith named Yaqub bin Laith Saffar was born in present-day Afghanistan. He became a "Robin Hood" type who took from the wealthy to give to the poor. He created his own Islamic army and fought against injustices of the Arab Abbasid caliphs, tax collectors and resisted oppressive rule. He grew a vast empire.
